Why you should go to Kaunas

A lesser-known destination, Kaunas is a great value place to visit with a fantastic array of restaurants, fascinating museums and green leafy spaces. Surrounded by hills and located at the confluence of two rivers, Kaunas is Lithuania's centre of communication and business.

To many Lithuanians, it is seen as the heart of the country, and was the provisional capital from 1920 to 1939. During this period, much of the city was built as 12,000 new buildings appeared. Around half of these buildings still remain, earning Kaunas a European Heritage label for its modernist architecture. It combines this architecture with mediaeval city walls and 21st century buildings, representing every part of Kaunastic history.

With avenues lined with trees, open squares, museums, theatres and a range of cuisine including traditional Lithuanian food, Kaunas is the perfect cultural destination.
